Having read a critique of the play in the Italian theater magazine “Spario,” I decided to search out the play.
The story of my quest for the play is quite a story in itself, but also long, so I will skip it here. I owe the opportunity to play this beautiful play to İtalya'da Bilitisin Şarkılarını oynayan oyuncu Jole Rosa, who played the role in Italy and the pianist Gian Luca Pezzino who staged it. These two wonderful artists had adapted the play from Pierre Louys's “Songs of Bilitis” and his novel “Aphrodite” and accompanied it with the music Debussy.
In this lyrical novel, placed in ancient Greece, the author tells the love-filled life of the poet Bilitis. The incredibly beautiful poems of love stirred my emotions. The author’s contemporary Debussy must also have been touched very deeply, and he composed the music for this play. Parisian sources dating from the time of the first performance of the play state that it was a tremendous success. Lulu Menase did a beautiful job in staging the play whose music had mesmerized me and which I dreamed of playing one day. Once again, I was portaraying the story of a woman on stage. The French Cultural Center supported the staging of the play. They also supported a photogralhy exhibition of mine.
